Plastic welding is a bit different than a cast iron or stainless steel.
Yes, many people seem that melting it quite tedious and time-consuming.
But in this content, I will show you how to weld a plastic with an electric gun.
It is a DIY and quite straightforward process. And you can carry out the entire task successfully within a limited time.
So let’s take a closer look.
The necessary process of DIY plastic welding (Step by step):
Step 1: Set-up and cleaning process:
At first, take all types of safety tools. You must wear protective glasses and a dust mask.
Then, select a ventilated workspace for flexible operation. Make sure air can easily pass away.
Also, you should wear a pair of gloves and protective clothing. In this case, I prefer the plastic-type items.
Now, remove all the dirt and grease form this plastic material. You can use soap or detergent.
Step 2: Plastic joining:
The melting depends on variable temperatures. That’s why the gun setting is an essential part of welding.
Usually, you will need 200 to 300 degrees C temperature.
Now, fit the tack welding nozzle for accurate holding. Then wait for its melting. Now, it is time for trimming.
You should trim it with a welding rod and an angle cutting pliers. The trimming rod helps to hold the pliers.
Even you can use a trimming knife instead of pliers. It helps to scrape the rod at a precise point.
After the end of this task, you have to cool down the nozzle (never touch it at the hot state)
Move the gun slowly. You should start the joining process at the top portion of the crack area.
Now, hold this gun at the downward position at a 45-degree angle and touch the edge of the plastic.
Keep heating until the plastic melt properly. When you will notice the color change, move the torch.
Step 3: Finishing:
Make sure the plastic is properly cool down. After that, you have to clean it again. If you need coloring and numbering, you can do it on this stage.
What do you mean by thermosetting polymer?
A thermosetting resin, polymer or plastic, are often called a thermoset. It is irreversibly hardened by curing of a soft solid or viscous liquid resin or prepolymer. Curing is induced by heat or suitable radiation. And it may be promoted by high pressure or mixing with a catalyst.
Can you plastic weld PVC?
You can weld a variety of plastics like Polypropylene, High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE), CPVC, PVC, ABS. And even you can weld polycarbonate or Lexan together using several basic welding techniques.
Can you plastic weld with a soldering iron?
You can use your soldering iron to weld plastic for fabrication and even artistic purposes. You can push the two pieces of plastic together and then hold them while you run the soldering iron tip along the seam until these pieces are partially melted together.
Again, friction welding is a solid-state welding process. It generates heat through mechanical friction.
Why is plastic welding more sensible than any metallic item?
I am not saying that this joining process is so complicated. But my recommendation is giving much concern.
Cause its withstand capability is remarkably less than any metallic object. Even it cannot tolerate an excessive amount of temperature.
There is a strong possibility of a breakage of its fragile characteristics.
And in this case, I cannot prefer any conventional welding tool. In this case, you can consider the hot air welding tools, hot wedge welder, industrial welders, etc.
These models are mainly for plastic welding.
You will love the precise joining with excellent accuracy.
How to weld plastic with a lighter?
You can melt this object quickly with a medium-range temperature heat gun. Also, you can use an alcohol burner for melting and joining.
These processes are pretty simple and require less time. But the downside is it is too messy and difficult to clean.
Another drawback is this lighter cannot produce excessive amounts of heat when required.
What will bond plastic to plastic?
Usually, the melted plastic can quickly bond together. But for more precise joining, you can use glue.
Plastic weld glue:
For a big adjustment, you should use any quality adhesive or sealant. I prefer super glue. Also, you can consider Headliner and Tiger seal products for the required grade of effectiveness
Follow my welding technique for high-effective fabrication. This formula is unique and universal for joining all types of the plastic part.
And it is one of the most natural spin welding methods.
